OneKind Petition

I'm posting this here as I couldn't fit enough information into a Facebook status update (420 characters is just not enough!).

Can everyone who cares about animals please sign the petition that can be found here:

http://www.onekind.org/take_action/campaigns/animal_experiments/

Why should you sign? In short, the UK currently maintains relatively high standards regarding animal experimentation (although not the outright ban we should have). Most EU member states do not. The EU is rolling out some new legislation to standardise the practice, however the standards set out in this legislation are lower than that currently in place in the UK, with very little emphasis on the investigation of alternative practices, and no legislation specific to the use of primates. The EU directive also sets out very poor standards for the killing of animals used in animal testing, such as young puppies or kittens being killed by a blow to the head, or the decapitation of adult (sparrow sized) birds.

This petition aims to convince the government to maintain our existing standards, rather than 'copying down' the practices suggested in the new directive.

The full details can be found at the petition link. The OneKind site also has a lot of good information regarding animal cruelty, and the good work they are doing to combat it.

It only takes a minute or so to fill out the petition, so please, take the time to do it.
